Torae Will Teach Music Business College Course In Brooklyn

As seen on BILLBOARD, a new hip-hop education course, “The Business of Music”, is an eight-week course taking place this spring semester at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, NY conducted by Torae. The class will examine important aspects and tools of the music business. This class is designed to educate aspiring recording industry professionals; you do not have to attend Medgar Evers college to enroll.

“The Business of Music” will be taking place from February 26th to April 15th on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6-9pm. Course objectives include an introduction into the industry, an understanding of Performing Rights Organizations (ASCAP/BMI/SESAC/GMR), gaining familiarity with streaming in the new digital era and how it relates to revenue, the pros and cons of different type of record deals, insight on setting up one’s own company, and the mechanics of marketing, publishing, marketing, merchandising and touring among other key business objectives. An array of guest speakers will be present during this course.

Being behind the mic(s) as an emcee and as a radio personality, he always felt as a teacher of the culture. “I am multi-faceted, and I can speak about the culture through a few different lenses, from emceeing to branding, and now as a professor,” says Torae.

Creator of “The Business of Music”, Torae – who has collaborated with the likes of DJ Premier, Pete Rock & 9th Wonder as well as rappers Wale, Rapsody and Talib Kweli- will teach the mechanics of the multi-billion dollar business behind hip-hop and share the secrets of this sometimes brutal, albeit envied, society. After successfully carving his way in the culture himself, Torae is excited to help others discover the various avenues available in this industry and share his excellent intel on the past, present, and future of hip-hop.
